Newborn Photos with Dogs: Tips for Picture-Perfect Family Portraits
When Brittany called me about her upcoming newborn session, she asked whether her pups could be incorporated into the session somehow. She had a chocolate lab and an Aussie. Being a dog lover myself, I knew that this was definitely something I wanted to work with Brittany on. After her session, I can confidently say that her pups stole the show! Fortunately for Brittany, this wasn’t the first time a client had asked to have their newborn photos with their dogs. In fact, it’s a request that I get quite often.
Here are some of the most memorable moments from newborn sessions with dogs:
For many families, their dogs are their first baby. Families are endeared to their canine companions. So much so that they wonder how the dogs will respond when the baby comes home. Personal story: our mini dachshund broke out into full-body hives when we brought our first child home! The poor little guy was so stressed out, ha!
Essential Precautions for Newborn-Dog Photo Sessions
Newborn sessions are up to 1.5 hours long, which gives us enough time to photograph the session as well as time for any diaper changes or feedings. This is also a great amount of time for dogs, too.
When we first begin the session, I don’t always incorporate the dog at first. I still want to gain their trust. So I begin photographing my clients. Usually, the dogs will become curious and want to be with their owner, and they will ‘step into the scene’ on their own. I follow their lead and go with it.
If dog becomes stressed or overstimulated, I make sure that the baby is safe. Either in mom and dad’s arms or in the crib. Usually, at that point, mom and dad are good about removing the dog, and we try again later.
The truth is, we only need about 10-15 minutes of good doggie behavior to get what I need. The rest of the session is focused on the family.
Preparing Your Dog for the Photo Session
When I arrive to a newborn session, I take my time, let the dogs sniff and greet me while I make small talk with my clients. It’s important to me that the dogs trust that I am a safe person in their home.
I recommend taking your dog for a walk before our session to get its energy out ahead of time
For in-home newborn sessions: Dogs are so comfortable in their own home, that they are more relaxed and willing to lay at your feet, curl up next to you, and ‘pose’ for the photo.
Another great tip is to have an extra set of hands to help ie: mom/mother-in-law at the home to help wrangle the pup should it need a break.
Posing Ideas That Work
One of the easiest ways that I have found to ‘pose’ a dog is to have the dog lay down where you want them, and then add in baby/mom/dad.
Vice versa, I also pose mom/dad/baby first, and then have the dog come to them. Both scenarios work, you just have to be patient.
Sometimes the best thing to do is just let the dogs get interested in the session itself. Then capture the moment. Sometimes, no prompting all all will create the sweetest moments.
What I appreciated about this chocolate lab was his kind, sweet, and gentle behavior. I believe he was a young 2-year-old, so he still had a little bit of that puppy inside of him. Our family is getting a lab of our own soon, and it was encouraging to see how well-mannered this one was!
Conclusion - Creating Images That Last a Lifetime
If your pup feels like part of the family (because they are!), why not include them in your newborn session? With a little planning, we can create images that celebrate this sweet season with everyone who matters most—fur babies included. Ready to book your newborn session? Let’s make it happen!
