Mini Session Vs Full Session Which is Best for You?
As a family photographer who offers both full sessions and mini session photography, I’ve come to realize that both types of sessions are popular. In the fall, I get lots of inquiries asking about mini sessions. But, I also get just as many - if not more - clients who prefer a longer full session. Both are great options. But, which one is right for you?
What is a Mini Session?
To keep it simple, a mini session is a ‘sampling’ of a full session. Here are some basic key features of how I structure my mini session photo shoots:
They are between 10-15 minute sessions
Sessions run back to back to make the most use of time
They are only photographed at a set location of the photographer’s choosing and set at an appointed time
The session fee includes 5 images. You’ll be shown a gallery of 15-25 final images and be able to choose your favorite from the gallery.
Options to upgrade to the full gallery for an additional $150
Best for immediate family only (not intended for extended family sessions)
Perfect for a quick maternity session, milestone, pregnancy announcement, updated family photo, or a Christmas card
Mini sessions are typically not offered year round, only offered during certain seasons. Mainly fall and spring. They are not available to book as one off sessions, they are meant to be booked back to back with other mini sessions.
Just because it’s a mini session, does not mean that you are getting a lower quality experience! I put just as much effort into my mini sessions during the session and during my editing as I do with my full sessions.
What is a Full Session?
Full sessions are my bread and butter. They’re what I book the most of and they allow time for moments to unfold. To expand a little bit, full sessions include:
Up to 45 minutes of session time. This gives us some breathing room and a slower-paced feeling.
You get to choose your location. Unlike mini sessions, where I choose the location, you get to choose which location best suits your family. Some families opt to have their session at their home! Of course, I’m always willing to help give you ideas of my own preferred locations.
Unlimited digital files. Your gallery will include 50+ edited digital images and they will all be included in your online gallery. No additional upcharge.
Full sessions are more tailored to your family. Before our session, I will look over your questionnaire and ‘get to know’ your vision for your session, glance at your family’s names and ages of kiddos. This helps me mentally prepare for what I can ‘set the stage’ for at your session.

How much time do you need with your photographer?
How do you want to feel during your session? Do you want to have things quick and snappy? Or, would you rather relax, and take things at a slower pace? When we go on family vacations we always book a full session. Afterall, we’re on vacation and we want time to slow down!
For full sessions, I have really found that 45 minutes is the sweet spot when it comes to photographing families, especially those with young children. We have time to ease into it and create an environment that the kiddos feel comfortable in. It’s long enough to let them warm up, but not so long that they melt down. Lots of ‘in between’ moments are captured at full sessions.
On the flipside, 15 minute mini sessions are literally quick and snappy. I move fast to ensure we get the shots we need! With mini sessions, you’re mainly just going to receive portraits only. There’s not a lot of time to catch those candid ‘in between’ moments. Alot of my clients like the fast and efficient method! Honestly, I like them both the same! Just for different reasons, each has it’s place!
Which session works best for growing families?
A lot of this depends on how young your kiddos are and how well they open up (or not) to me (a stranger). One thing I want to stress is that sometimes younger children need time to warm up to strangers, especially if your kids tend to be on the shy side. Whereas, kids who are a little older or a little bit more extroverted do fine with a 15 minute session and can open up right away. You know your family best! I find that mini sessions are just perfect for a quick updated family photo. Whereas the full sessions are more appropriate for a maternity or a big milestone session. Extended family sessions will always require a full session! The different groupings and dynamics are not possible during a 15 minute stint.
When should you choose a mini session?
You want a budget friendly option/lower investment
You just need a handful of images because you’re just getting an updated family photo
You’re capturing an in small milestone and just want to document it
You’re not too picky about location
Your kids love people and don’t need any time to warm up
You just want a quick session and don’t need the in between moments
Why a full session might be a better investment for you
You have a specific vision in mind that you’d like captured
You want time to slow down and enjoy the session
You want all the in between moments captured
You have a specific location in mind for your session
You’re wanting to include grandma and grandpa, or you’re including extended family
So, which would you pick? Mini vs. Full session
The truth is, there’s no right answer! It truly all depends on what season of life you’re in and what you’ve envisioned for your session. Both options serve different purposes and can be helpful in capturing your memories!
